Nas últimas décadas os avanços tecnológicos foram brutais e é inegável a facilidade que eles trouxeram para a vida do ciclo viajante. In recent decades technological advances have been brutal and the help they have brought to the life of the cycle traveller is undeniable.

Carregadores solares, iluminação LED, dínamos de cubo modernos, GPS, smartphones, tablets, netbooks e a internet, dentre muitas outras coisas, estas são as mais comuns e mais utilizadas pelos ciclo desbravadores do mundo moderno. Solar chargers, LED lighting, modern cube dynamos, GPS, smartphones, tablets, netbooks and the internet, among many other things, these are the most common and most used by the cycle tourist of this modern world.

Na nossa viagem os gadgets que utilizamos e facilitam nossa vida são os smartphones, um netbook, baterias externas, dínamo de cubo, painel solar e iluminação LED para camping. Dentre estes todos, aqui vamos falar mais dos que dão acesso a internet, que são nossos smartphones principalmente. O netbook utilizamos mais para editar imagens, vídeos e nossos posts do Blog. Este post de agora estou escrevendo no netbook, principalmente pela melhor visualização e facilidade do teclado. Quem é “dedudo” sabe do que estou falando 🙂 . In our trip the gadgets we use and make our life easier are smartphones, a netbook, external batteries, hub dynamo, solar panel and LED lighting for camping. Eu e a Flavinha muitas vezes na nossa viagem já nos pegamos questionando como deveria ser uma volta ao mundo de bicicleta a decadas atrás, sem toda essa tecnologia moderna que facilita muitas coisas. Essas pessoas que fizeram longas viagens no passado, principalmente na era pré-internet, foram muito guerreiras. No cenário brasileiro conhecemos um destes em especial, o Sr. Antônio Olinto, pelo qual temos apreço e admiração.

Flavinha and I have often found ourselves wondering how a bicycle tourist should be back decades, without all this modern technology that makes things easier. These people who have made long trips in the past, especially in the pre-internet era, have been very warlike. In the Brazilian scenario we know one of these in particular, Mr. Antônio Olinto, for which we have appreciation and admiration.

O Olinto foi realmente um desbravador em fazer uma volta ao mundo de bicicleta naquela época (1993), sem smartphones, gps, internet ou tantas outras facilidades ou equipamentos específicos para cicloturismo presentes no Brasil. Como esta na moda hoje nas mídias sociais, comparados a ele e outros do passado, a maioria dos ciclo-viajantes atuais são “ciclo turistas Nutella” e também nos incluímos neste grupo, hehehe. Olinto was really a pioneer in cycling around the world at that time (1993), without smartphones, gps, internet or many other facilities or specific equipment for cycling in Brazil. As it is fashionable today in social media, compared to him and others of the past, most of the current cycle-travelers are “Nutella cycle tourists” and we also include ourselves in this group, hahaha.

Vou explicar melhor aqui baseado no título deste post “internet, amiga do ciclo viajante” e me ater mais a este assunto, deixando as outras tecnologias para posts e reviews futuros. I will explain better here based on the title of this post “internet, friend of the cycle tourist” and I stick more to this subject, leaving the other technologies for future posts and reviews.

Atualmente é cada vez mais fácil ter acesso a internet, mesmo em lugares antes considerados remotos. Wi-fi e cartões 3G ou 4G para celulares estão mais disponíveis e fáceis de adquirir, com planos cada vez melhores, no mundo todo. Com a internet vem a maior arma do ciclo turista, a informação. It is becoming increasingly easy to access the internet, even in places once considered remote. Wi-Fi and 3G or 4G mobile phone cards are more available and easy to acquire, with better and better plans worldwide. With the internet comes the biggest weapon of the cycle tourist, the information.

Com o volume e facilidade de acesso a informação que temos hoje, as coisas ficam menos complicadas. Antes de chegar em alguma região, conseguimos pesquisar se outras pessoas já fizeram esta rota, situação do clima no lugar, estado das estradas, perfil altimétrio e percursos paralelos (estradas rurais, trilhas, etc…) com o GPS e tudo isso na palma da mão e em poucos minutos. With the volume and ease of access to information we have today, things get less complicated. Before arriving in any area, we were able to find out if other people have already done this route, weather situation in the place, road conditions, altimetrial profile and parallel routes (rural roads, trails, etc …) with GPS and all this in our hands in a few minutes.

Algumas ferramentas que utilizamos muito e nos ajuda bastante são as mídias sociais e de hospedagem solidária. O Facebook por exemplo nos conecta com grupos de cicloturismo, viagens e mochileros nos quais tiramos nossas dúvidas e fazemos contatos que nos rendem hospedagens em diversos lugares e o mais legal de tudo, conhecemos pessoas incríveis e fazemos novas amizades. O Warmshowers e Couchsurfing, que são websites de hospedagem solidária, nos dão também a oportunidade de obter ajuda e hospedagem em diversos lugares pelos nossos caminhos.  Somado a tudo isso vem a maior força da internet nos tempos atuais: uma informação clara e interessante pode se alastrar rapidamente como um rastilho de pólvora e provocar resultados interessantes em curto prazo. Some tools that we use a lot and helps us a lot are the social media and solidarity hosting. Facebook for example connects us with groups of cycling, travel and backpackers in which we ask our doubts and make contacts that render us lodging in different places and the coolest of all, we meet amazing people and make new friendships. Warmshowers and Couchsurfing, which are web hosting sites, also give us the opportunity to get help and lodging in different places along our paths. Added to all this comes the greatest force of the internet in today’s times: clear and interesting information can spread quickly like a gunpowder line and produce interesting results in the short term.

Um exemplo que aconteceu conosco, sem ação direta nossa, foi um live video feito conosco por um policial rodoviário (Cabo Tomas) no estado do Paraná. Quando estavamos passando pelo posto policial rodoviário na estrada que conecta Paranaguá a Pontal do Paraná, fomos parados por este policial que ficou curioso em nos ver ali com uma bicicleta tandem toda carregada. Após uma rápida conversa ele gostou da nossa história e perguntou se poderia fazer uma vídeo entrevista ao vivo pelo Facebook e concordamos. Após isto nos despedimos deste simpático policial e seguimos viagem. Deste dia em diante e até o momento que escrevo este post (cerca de 1 mês após a postagem da entrevista), este vídeo circulou muito pela internet, chegando a diversos estados brasileiros e até fora do país. Já fomos parados por pessoas em diversas cidades e estradas (muitas vezes estradas isoladas) perguntando se nós eramos o casal da volta do mundo do vídeo do policial. Estas pessoas quiseram tirar fotos, ofereceram ajuda, comida, hospedagem e até dinheiro, foi muito inesperado e não imaginávamos que poderia tomar proporções tão grandes. Os resultados foram muito bons. A última vez que olhamos, o vídeo já havia passado de 600 mil visualizações e 16 mil compartilhamentos. An example that happened to us, without direct action of us, was a live video made with us by a highway policeman (Cabo Tomas) in the state of Paraná. When we were passing by the police station on the road that connects Paranaguá to Pontal do Paraná, we were stopped by this policeman who was curious to see us there with a loaded tandem bicycle. After a quick chat he liked our story and asked if he could do a video interview live on Facebook and we agreed. After that, we said goodbye to this nice policeman and went back to the road. From this day forward and until the moment I write this post (about 1 month after the interview post), this video circulated a lot on the internet, arriving in several Brazilian states and even outside the country. We’ve been stopped by people in various cities and roads (often isolated roads) asking if we were the world trip couple of the cop’s video. These people wanted to take pictures, offered help, food, lodging and even money, it was very unexpected and we did not imagine that it could take such great proportions. The results were very good. The last time we looked, the video had already passed 600,000 views and 16,000 shares.

Na nossa opinião, sabendo utilizar a internet, vale a pena o acesso a ela para obtenção de informação e busca de ajuda para hospedagem por exemplo. Outra coisa interessante é o contato com a família e amigos, mesmo tão longe, ajudando um pouco a matar as saudades. In our opinion, knowing how to use the internet, it is worth the access to it for obtaining information and seeking help for hosting for example. Another interesting thing is the contact with family and friends, even so far away.

Se você é um ciclo viajante com dúvidas sobre levar ou não algo para acessar a internet, a nossa opinião é LEVE. Mesmo que vá utilizar somente quando houver acesso gratuito a alguma rede wi-fi, vale a pena. As possibilidades são inúmeras, desde o contato com outras pessoas como já citado, até vídeos explicando como ajustar aquela peça na bicicleta que você não sabe direito. If you are a cycle traveler with questions about whether or not to take something to access the internet, our opinion is TAKE IT. Even if you use it only when there is free access to some wi-fi network, it’s worth it. The possibilities are numerous, from the contact with other people as already mentioned, to videos explaining how to adjust that part in the bicycle that you do not know for sure.
