Vamos relatar aqui a nossa visão de como foi fazer viagens de bicicleta pelo Brasil. A idéia é esclarecer algumas dúvidas que surgem em brasileiros e estrangeiros quando pensam em se aventurar de bicicleta por este país de tamanho continental. Cabe ressaltar que esta é nossa opinião, que se baseou nas experiências que tivemos durantes nossas cicloviagens em território nacional e que outros podem ter relatos discordantes. Let’s relate here our vision of how it was to make bicycle trips through Brazil. The idea is to clarify some doubts that arise in brazilians and foreigners when they think of biking through this country of continental size. It is worth mentioning that this is our opinion, which was based on the experiences we had during our cycle trips in this territory and that others may have discordant reports.

Um pais continental: Isso mesmo, o Brasil é muito grande e com isso vem vários “países” dentro de um só. Já pedalamos a costa do nordeste, a região do vale do Paraíba, interior de São Paulo, região da Serra da Canastra no estado de Minas Gerais e os estados do Paraná, Santa Catarina e Rio Grande do Sul (predominantemente pela região costeira). No momento que escrevemos este POST estamos na divisa do Brasil com o Uruguay, prontos para deixar nosso querido país. Levamos cerca de 3 meses de viagem para percorrer os quase 2800 km até a divisa com o Uruguay, aproveitando as belezas turísticas que tem pelo caminho. Se você esta pensando em cruzar o Brasil, reserve vários meses para fazer isso, o país é enorme. A continental country: That’s right, Brazil is very big and with this comes several “countries” within one. We have already pedaled the northeast coast, the Paraíba valley region, the rural area of São Paulo state, the Serra da Canastra region in the state of Minas Gerais and the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul (predominantly the coastal region). At the time we write this POST we are on the border of Brazil and Uruguay, ready to leave our beloved country. We took about 3 months to travel the almost 2800 km to the border with Uruguay, taking advantage of the tourist beauties that have on the way. If you are thinking of crossing Brazil, take several months to do this, the country is huge.

Muitos países em um país só: As diferenças culturais, culinárias, de fauna, flora e sotaques é evidente conforme cruzamos os estados brasileiros. Não tem nada de monótono em se cruzar um pais só durante muito tempo, quando se trata de Brasil. Dificilmente alguém vai enjoar de atravessar regiões de bela natureza e praias com bonitas paisagens. Many countries in a single country: The cultural, culinary, fauna, flora and accent differences are evident as we cross the Brazilian states. There is nothing monotonous about crossing the same country for long time, when it comes to Brazil. Hardly anyone will get sick of crossing regions of beautiful nature and beaches with beautiful landscapes.

Evitem os grandes centros: Acho que esta dica é válida para qualquer lugar no mundo, mas o Brasil tem cidades grandes, principalmente as localizadas no estado de São Paulo e as principais capitais e nenhuma delas é muito amigável para bicicletas. Se tiver que atravessar um grande centro por qualquer motivo, prefira os domingos. Todas as experiências mais estressantes que tivemos, com relação a trânsito e segurança pessoal foi entrando e saindo de grandes cidades. Avoid the big centers: I think this tip is valid for any place in the world, but Brazil has big cities, mainly those located in the state of São Paulo and the main capitals, none of them is very friendly for bicycles. If you have to cross a large center for any reason, prefer on Sundays. All the more stressful experiences we had with respect to traffic and personal safety were when coming in and out of big cities.

Os perigos estão muito mais nos jornais e televisões do que na viagem: Se você evitar os grandes centros como relatado logo acima, já vai evitar a maioria dos perigos. Todas as vezes que nos sentimos mais inseguros ou ameaçados foi na periferia de grandes cidades. Se o viajante seguir as dicas dos moradores locais, evitando lugares mais inseguros e rodovias movimentadas, o Brasil é relativamente seguro para pedalar. Fizemos bastante camping selvagem, principalmente em regiões rurais ou nas imediações de rodovias menos movimentadas e não tivemos problemas. The dangers are much more in the newspapers and televisions than in the trip: If you avoid the large centers as reported just above, you will already avoid most of the dangers. Every time we feel more insecure or threatened it was  on the outskirts of big cities. If the traveler follows the tips of locals, avoiding more insecure places and busy highways, Brazil is relatively safe to pedal. We did a lot of wild camping, mainly in rural areas or in the immediate vicinity of less busy highways and we had no problems.

Aro 26: Parece jargão de ciclo viajante, mas já passamos pela situação de rasgar um pneu na estrada e só haviam pequenas cidades ao redor com bicicletarias muito simples, nas quais só havia aro 26. 26″ wheels: It sounds like cycle traveling jargon, but we’ve already had a tire ripping on the road and there were only small towns around with very simple bicycle shops, in which there were only 26 inches tires.

Muitas pessoas boas e hospitaleiras: Parece bairrismo falar assim sobre nosso país, mas o brasileiro é hospitaleiro. Em algumas regiões ele pode ter um jeitão mais rude e até mal educado, mas o coração é bom e ele tende a querer ajudar de alguma forma. Nos perrengues que tivemos pelos caminhos sempre apareceu uma boa alma para dar uma forcinha. Many good and hospitable people: It seems like common talk when it comes to someone talking about his/her home country, but the Brazilians are hospitable. In some places they may look more rude and uneducated, but the heart is good and they tend to help in some way. In the bad moments that we had by the ways always appeared a good soul to give a help.

É difícil ficar sem banho: Os postos de gasolina pelo Brasil afora tem chuveiro para os caminhoneiros, nem todos claro, mas muitos tem e além disso temos um litoral enorme e uma riqueza em rios e lagos. E quando não tem, aqui não faz tanto frio assim a ponto de impossibilitar aquele banho de canequinha. Sempre demos um jeito de ficarmos limpinhos. It is difficult to stay without bath: The gas stations throughout Brazil have shower for the truck drivers, not all of them, but many have and besides we have a huge coastline and a wealth of rivers and lakes. And when it does not, it is not so cold here to the point of making it impossible to shower using a water bottle. We’ve always found a way to stay clean.

Os motoristas em geral ainda são imprudentes: É uma triste realidade, notamos que tem melhorado nos últimos anos, mas a atitude em geral ainda é de uma direção agressiva. Não acreditamos que seja proposital, do tipo “Uia! Lá vem um ciclo-viajante, foi passar tirando uma fina deles só pra ver o tombo!”, mas sim algo relacionado a uma mal educação ao trânsito. Prefira rodovias com acostamente, estradas com pouco tráfego ou estradas rurais. Todas as vezes que evitamos rodovias movimentadas, a viagem foi muito mais tranquila e é claro, não pedalamos final da tarde ou a noite. Drivers in general are still reckless: It is a sad reality, we notice that it has improved in recent years, but the attitude in general is still in an aggressive direction. We do not believe that it is purposeful, like “Look! There comes a cycle tourist, lets pass by like touching the handlebar just to see the fall!”, But something related to poor education in traffic. Choose roads with roadside, roads with little traffic or rural roads. Every time we avoid busy highways, the trip was much more peaceful and of course, we did not cycle late afternoon or at night.

Marmitex: O segredo para a felicidade e economia quando não se quer cozinhar a própria comida toda hora. Os marmitex são carregados de carboidratos e algumas proteínas, em quantidade mais que suficiente para alimentar um pedalador esfomeado. Comemos uma marmita em 2 e saímos satisfeitos. Os preços giram entre 10 e 12 reais normalmente. Marmitex: The secret to happiness and economy when you do not want to cook your own food all the time. The marmitex are loaded with carbohydrates and some proteins, in more than enough quantity to feed a hungry cyclist. We eat a kettle in 2 and are satisfied. Prices usually run between 3 and 4 USD.

E os bichos?? : Pois é, a maioria dos bichos selvagens vivos que vimos foi bem de longe e maioria deles inofensivos. Nas estradas se vêem muitos animais mortos atropelados, o que é triste. Animais menores, como insetos, aracnídeos e cobras não são tão comuns assim em campings selvagens como todos temem pelo Brasil. Na nossa opinião o “bicho homem” ainda é o que traz mais riscos. And what about the wild life?? : Yeah, most of the living wild animals we saw were from far away and most of them harmless. On the roads you see many dead animals run over, which is sad. Smaller animals such as insects, arachnids and snakes are not as common in wild campsites as they all fear for Brazil. In our opinion the “human being” is still the most risky.

Estrangeiros, tentem aprender o português: o brasileiro sempre dá um jeito de se comunicar, mas normalmente a maioria não sabe outros idiomas e se você souber falar um pouco de português, pelo menos frases mais úteis no dia a dia, sua vida vai ficar muito mais fácil pelo Brasil. Foreigners, try to learn Portuguese: the Brazilian always gives a way to communicate, but usually most do not know other languages and if you can speak a little Portuguese, at least more useful phrases in everyday life, your life will be very easier in Brazil.

Ainda há pouco gente com aplicativos de hospitalidade no Brasil: Couchsurfing e Warmshowers ainda é escasso fora de grandes cidades, então vale a pena buscar apoio, quando necessário, em grupos do Facebook ou na própria conversação com pessoas locais. There are still a few people with hospitality applications in Brazil: Couchsurfing and Warmshowers are still scarce outside big cities, so it’s worth seeking support, when necessary, in Facebook groups or in the conversation with local people.

Wi-fi : A internet wi-fi aberta não é tão comum em praças de pequenas cidades como outros países, mas na maioria dos restaurantes e postos de gasolina ela tem se tornado cada vez mais comum. Pare, aproveite para tomar um guaraná gelado e peça a senha do wi-fi. Wi-fi: The open wi-fi internet is not as common in small town squares as other countries, but in most restaurants and gas stations it has become increasingly commonplace. Stop, take a cold guarana and ask for the wi-fi password.

Mosquitos: O Brasil é um país tropical, com bom índice pluviométrico e os mosquitos adoram isso. Use repelente e uma mosquiteira, mesmo quando for dormir na casa de alguém ou hoteis e pousadas, acredite, eles estarão lá sedentes pelo seu sangue. Normalmente quando acampando o problema acaba pois eles não conseguem entrar na barraca. Mosquitoes: Brazil is a tropical country with lots of rainfall and mosquitoes love it. Use repellent and a mosquito net, even when you sleep in someone’s house or hotels and lodges, believe me, they’ll be there. Usually when camping the problem ends because they can not get into the tent, but outside the tent the repellent can be a skin saver.

Sol: Mesmo no sul do país o sol é intenso. Use mangas compridas, bonés, chapeus e protetor solar. Todas as vezes que estava meio nublado e não nos protegemos dos raios solares, estávamos gratinados no final do dia. Sun: Even in the south of the country the sun is intense. Use long sleeves, caps, hats and sunscreen. Every time it was cloudy and we did not protect ourselves from the sun’s rays, we were gratin at the end of the day.

Nossa experiência pedalando pelo Brasil foi muito boa, vimos muitas paisagens bonitas, bichos diferentes, muitas frutas gostosas, comidas saborosas e calor humano. Our experience pedaling in Brazil was very good, we saw many beautiful landscapes, different animals, many delicious fruits, tasty foods and met good people.
