A ruta 40 na Argentina é longa e apresenta trechos de rípio mais ao sul, em alguns pontos com muitas pedras soltas e grandes, fazendo a bicicleta pular bastante. Route 40 in Argentina is long and has dirt road stretches further south, at some points with many loose and large stones, making the bike jump a lot.

Já havíamos tido uma experiência de ruptura de solda do quadro ( POST “Quadro da bicicleta quebrado” ), que foi resolvida com uma soldagem na cidade de Castillos, Uruguay, e desde então seguia firme e forte sem outros problemas. Só não imaginávamos que teríamos outro problema com alguma solda, desta vez no garfo e no meio de um trecho bem desértico na patagônia argentina. We had already had a experience of breaking the weld of the frame (POST “Cracked Bicycle Frame“), which was solved with a welding in the city of Castillos, Uruguay, and from then on it was firm and strong without any other problems. We just did not imagine that we would have another problem with some soldering, this time in the fork and in the middle of a very desert stretch in Argentine Patagonia.

Nesta estrada de ripio na Ruta 40, patagonia argentina, entre trancos e pulos da bicicleta comecei a sentir algo estranho com o garfo. Não sei explicar ao certo, mas notei que algo estava errado. Paramos a bicicleta e eu olhei bem, procurei por algo no bagageiro dianteiro e não consegui perceber nada a princípio, seguindo então nosso caminho.  Mas a sensação continuava. Decidi parar e inspecionar os mínimos detalhes e foi então que veio um achado muito ruim nessas horas, uma das soldas do garfo dianteiro da bicicleta estava rachando. On this gravel road on Route 40, Argentine Patagonia, I started to feel something strange with my fork. I can not explain, but i noticed  something was wrong. We stopped the bike and I looked around, I looked for something in the front rack and I could not find anything wrong at first, following our way. But the feeling continued. I decided to stop and inspect the smallest details and it was then that a very bad finding came at that time, one of the welds of the front fork of the bike was cracking.

Depois de soltar um palavrão, decidimos que seria melhor empurrar a bicicleta pelos próximos 10 km até chegar em um posto de gasolina que sabíamos que existia por alí. Dos males o menor, pelo menos o garfo só foi dar problema nos últimos 10 km de um trecho longo de 70 km de rípio no meio do nada. After cursing some bad words, we decided that it would be better to push the bicycle for the next 10 km until arriving at a gas station that we knew existed there. At least the fork was only giving problem in the last 10 km of a long stretch of 70 km of that dirt road in the middle of nowhere.

Quando começamos a empurrar a bicicleta eu comecei a pensar onde conseguiria fazer uma solda neste garfo e que gambiarra faria para o ele aguentar mais tempo se fosse necessário, eis que surge mais um dos “anjos dos viajantes” que inexplicavelmente aparecem nestas horas de desespero, um motor home guiado por uma simpática família de argentinos. When we started to push the bike I started to think about where I could do a welding on this fork and what diy way would make it take longer if it was necessary, here comes another one of the “travelers angels” that inexplicably appear in these hours of despair, a motor home guided by a friendly family of Argentines.

Pepe, sua esposa e seus três filhos pararam seu motor home, um furgãozinho bem legal, ao nosso lado e perguntaram se precisávamos de ajuda. Explicamos a situação e eles prontamente disseram que poderiam nos dar uma carona até o posto mais próximo. Mesmo com o motor home bem cheio, o Pepe amarrou a bicicleta no teto do furgão e embarcamos com ele. Além de toda esta sorte, o Pepe ainda contou que entendia de soldas e que poderia fazer uma solda de emergência no posto de gasolina se tivesse uma máquina para isso lá. Pepe, with his wife and three children stopped his motor home, a nice little van, next to us and asked if we needed help. We explained the situation and they promptly said they could give us a ride to the nearest station. Even with the full motor home, Pepe tied the bike on the van’s roof and boarded it. Besides all this luck, Pepe still said that he knows about welding and that he could do an emergency welding at the gas station if there was a machine for it there.

Chegando no posto veio a surpresa completa, eles tinham uma máquina de soldar lá mas ninguém sabia usar. O Pepe conversou com o pessoal que trabalhava lá e eles ligaram a máquina. Ele fez uma solda emergêncial no garfo, que o deixou bem firme. Arriving at the station came the complete surprise, they had a welding machine there but nobody knew how to use it. Pepe talked to the people who worked there and they started the machine. He made an emergency soldering on the fork, which made it very firm.

Mais um susto que foi resolvido por uma incrível família que conhecemos pelos caminhos. Mais a frente, refizemos a solda na cidade de Puerto Natales, já no Chile. One more fright that was solved by an amazing family we met along the way. Later on, the welding was remade in the city of Puerto Natales, already in Chile.

Com isso conseguimos chegar até o Ushuaia sem outros problemas. Conversamos com o framebuilder que produziu o quadro e o garfo, Igor Miyamura, que também estranhou o ocorrido e disse que pode ser resultado de um lote ruim de materiais de soldar que recebeu. Ele disse ainda que como tudo estava na garantia, poderiamos deixar o quadro e garfo no Ushuaia, que ele já estava produzindo tudo novo para pegarmos em São Paulo durante nossa escala antes de seguirmos para Marrocos. With that we managed to get to Ushuaia without other problems. We talked to the framebuilder who produced the frame and the fork, Igor Miyamura, who got surprised and said that it could be the result of a bad lot of welding materials he received. He also said that since everything was under warranty, we could leave the frame and fork in Ushuaia, and he was already producing everything new so that we could pick it up in São Paulo during our stopover before we go to Morocco.
