Durante este trecho de nossa viagem pelo extremo da América do Sul estávamos ansiosos em conhecer a Carretera Austral ou Ruta 7, no Chile. During this stretch of our trip through the extreme of South America we were anxious to get to know the Carretera Austral or Ruta 7 in Chile.

A Carretera Austral é uma estrada que passa por uma das regiões mais bonitas e cheia de natureza no território chileno e é roteiro famoso entre ciclo viajantes. Não preciso nem dizer que encontramos vários por lá, de diversos lugares no mundo, o que deixou tudo ainda mais interessante. Carretera Austral is a road that passes through one of the most beautiful and full of nature places in the Chilean territory and is a famous route among cycle travelers. We met several there, from different places in the world, which made everything even more interesting.

Essa estrada começa em Puerto Montt e termina na Villa O´Higgins, mais ao sul. Seu traçado tem 1240 km de extensão, com trechos asfaltados e de rípio, além travessias de ferry boat em alguns pontos. This road starts in Puerto Montt and ends at Villa O’Higgins, further south. Its route is 1240 km long, with asphalted sections and off road ones, besides ferry crossings in some points.

Nós não percorremos a Carretera de ponta a ponta, pois entramos no Chile pelo “Paso Futaleufu” e entramos na Carretera no vilarejo de Santa Lucia, que no momento em que passamos estava totalmente soterrada por uma avalanche que a cobriu de barro, destruindo esta bela cidadezinha e infelizmente matando muitas pessoas alí. A cena nos parecia de um daqueles filmes de guerra. Passando pelo que sobrou da cidadezinha, ficamos muito tristes com o que víamos, tudo encoberto de barro, carros virados, casas destruidas, moveis, eletrodomésticos, roupas e brinquedos em meio ao lamaçal, além de muitos militares por todos os lados, inclusive nos indicando por onde deveríamos evacuar o local com rapidez. We did not cross the road from end to end, as we entered Chile through Paso Futaleufu and entered the Carretera in the village of Santa Lucia, which at the moment we passed was totally buried by a landslide that covered it with clay, destroying this beautiful town and sadly killing many people there. The scene looked like one of those war movies. Passing through what was left of the town, we were very saddened by what we saw, all covered with mud, cars upturned, houses destroyed, furniture, appliances, clothes and toys in the middle of the mire, besides many military on all sides, some of them showing us where we should evacuate the place quickly.

Depois que saímos da Villa Santa Lucia, ou do que restou dela, paramos a bicicleta no acostamento da Carretera Austral e conversamos sobre o que vimos e a sensação que tivemos ao passar por lá, imaginando o sofrimento dos que sobreviveram a este desastre natural. Ficamos abalados e a garoa fina que caia no momento deixava tudo mais triste ainda. O restante do dia foi de chuva fina até que cansados no final de tarde, passamos em frente a uma propriedade na beirra da estrada, onde pedimos para acampar e a resposta foi positiva. Neste local passamos uma noite tranquila e enchemos nossas garrafinhas com água cristalina de um rio ao lado, no outro dia pela manhã, antes de seguirmos viagem. After we left Villa Santa Lucia, or what was left of it, we stopped the bicycle on the side of the Carretera Austral and talked about what we saw and the feeling we had as we passed by, imagining the suffering of those who survived this natural disaster. We were shaken and the fine drizzle that was falling in the moment made everything even sadder. The rest of the day was of fine rain until we were tired in the late afternoon, we passed in front of a property on the edge of the road where we asked to camp and the response was positive. In this place we spent a quiet night and filled our bottles with crystal clear water from a river next door the other day in the morning before leaving.

Saindo do primeiro lugar de camping selvagem da Carretera Austral, com um dia bonito, começamos a entender porque este roteiro é tão procurador por ciclo turistas do mundo todo. A natureza somada as paisagens ao redor deixam a viagem maravilhosa, mesmo com trechos de fortes subidas e com a chuva que cai de vez em quando. Neste dia aproveitamos para tirar mais fotos de todas estas belezas e realizamos outro camping selvagem em um “mirador” coberto que havia a beira da rodovia. Cozinhamos na parte coberta e depois montamos nossa barraca do lado de fora. Durante a noite o movimento de carros é mínimo e depois das 22h parecia que não passou mais ninguém por alí, pelo menos até a manhã seguinte, lá pelas 6 horas, quando ouvimos o primeiro carro do dia passar. Leaving the first place of wild camping of the Carretera Austral, with a beautiful day, we began to understand why this script is so solicitor by cycle tourists of the whole world. The nature added to the surrounding landscapes leave the trip wonderful, even with stretches of strong climbs and with the rain that falls from time to time. On this day we took more photos of all these beauties and made another wild camping in a “mirador” covered that there was at the edge of the highway. We cooked under the covered portion and then set up our tent outside. During the night the movement of cars is minimal and after 10:00 p.m., it seemed that no one else was there, at least until the next morning, around 6 o’clock, when we heard the first car of the day passing.

Outro dia bonito e encontramos um casal de franceses em suas bicicletas recumbentes, Coco & Lolo ( Link do Blog deles ), que já havíamos conhecido e ajudado no Parque Nacional Los Alerces, na Argentina, quando a gancheira do Löic (Lolo) quebrou e eu deixei minha gancheira de emergência com ele. Another beautiful day and we met a couple of French people on their recumbent bikes, Coco & Lolo (Blog’s Link ), which we had already met and helped in the Los Alerces National Park in Argentina, when Löic (Lolo) derailleur hanger broke and I I left my emergency one to him.

Depois de almoçarmos juntos na estrada, nos separamos e seguimos até a bela e pequenina cidade de La Junta, onde encontramos um camping aconchegante e com bom preço e decidimos ficar por 2 noites para descansar melhor. Em La Junta conhecemos um cachorrinho que insistia em nos seguir e que batizamos de “Chocho”, mas este pequenino terá um Post especial, mais a frente, dedicado a história que tivemos com ele. No camping conhecemos outros cicloviajantes, que muitas semanas depois voltamos a encontrar pelos caminhos. A partir deste momento ja encontrávamos, conversávamos e conhecíamos outros ciclo viajantes e acho que este é outro ponto especial da Carretera Austral, que é muito interessante para quem curte viajar de bike. After having lunch together on the road, we separated and followed to the beautiful and small town of La Junta, where we found a cozy camping with a good price and we decided to stay for 2 nights to rest better. In La Junta we met a puppy that insisted on following us and we called him “Chocho”, but this little one will have a special post, later on, dedicated to the history we had with him. At the camping we met other cycling travelers, who many weeks later we returned to meet by the wayside. From this moment on we met and talked to other travelers, and I think this is another special point of Carretera Austral, which is very interesting for those who enjoy traveling by bike.

Seguimos depois sentido Puyuhuapi, localizada a beira de uma bahia que tem conexão com o oceano Pacífico. A cidade é bem pequenina, mas tem um posto de gasolina onde recarregamos nosso fogareiro. Ficamos em um camping não tão aconchegante e silencioso quanto o anterior, mas também tivemos oportunidade de conhecer outros viajantes. Then we continue towards Puyuhuapi, located on the edge of a bay that has connection with the Pacific Ocean. The town is very small, but there is a gas station where we refueled our stove. We stayed at a campsite not as cozy and quiet as the previous one, but we also had a chance to meet other travelers.

Nos outros dias fizemos muitos campings selvagens em lugares cheios de natureza e belas paisagens, com água abundante por todos os lados, percorrendo cerca de 230 quilômetros até chegar a cidade de Coyhaique, onde tivemos mais uma experiência incrível. On the other days we made many wild campings in places full of nature and beautiful landscapes, with abundant water on all sides, traveling about 230 kilometers to reach the city of Coyhaique, where we had another incredible experience.

Chegando em Coyhaique fomos direto para a casa do “warmshowers” que iria nos receber, chegando lá tivemos 3 surpresas boas: a casa era do lado do centro da cidade, estava já com outros 6 ciclo viajantes super divertidos dormindo por lá e o nosso anfitrião era um chileno super boa gente e hospitaleiro. Ficamos por 3 noites lá, descansamos, trocamos experiências, comemos muito e fizemos amigos. Arriving in Coyhaique we went straight to the house of the “warmshowers” that would welcome us, arriving there we had 3 good surprises: the house was close to the city center, there were already 6 other cycle super fun travelers sleeping there and our host was a super nice and hospitable chilean guy. We stayed for 3 nights there, rested, exchanged experiences, ate a lot and made friends.

Com as baterias recarregadas seguimos pelos últimos 120 km da Carretera Austral para nós, acampando selvagem novamente em lugares muito bonitos e tranquilos, até chegarmos a cidade de Puerto Ibañez, onde pegamos um ferry boat para cruzar o Lago General Carrera até a cidade de Chile Chico e por este “paso” voltarmos a Argentina. With the batteries recharged we followed the last 120 km of Carretera Austral for us, camping wild again in very beautiful and quiet places until we reached the city of Puerto Ibañez, where we took a ferry boat to cross General Carrera Lake to the city of Chile Chico and from this “step” we return to Argentina.

A cidade de Puerto Ibañez é muito bonita e fica as margens de um belo lago de águas azuladas. Chegando lá ficamos em um camping pago por dois dias e conhecemos um casal de ciclo viajantes norte americanos, com os quais saímos a noite para uma festa local. The city of Puerto Ibañez is very beautiful and lies on the banks of a beautiful lake with blue waters. Arriving there we stayed at a paid camping for two days and met a couple of North American travelers, with whom we went out for a local party.

A travessia de ferry boat até a cidade de Chile Chico é bem tranquila e com paisagens belíssimas ao redor. Saímos do ferry boat em Chile Chico, nos despedimos de outros ciclo viajantes que faziam a travessia conosco no barco, e seguimos direto para a cidade de Los Antiguos, já do lado Argentino. The ferry boat crossing to the city of Chico Chico is very quiet and with beautiful scenery around. We left the ferry boat in Chile Chico, we said goodbye to other travelers who crossed with us, and headed straight for the city of Los Antiguos, already on the Argentinian side.

Percorremos apenas 500 do total de 1240 km da Carretera Austral, pois entramos nela pelo “paso Futaleufu” e saímos antes de seu final (Villa O´Higgins). Optamos por sair antes do final da Carretera pois o trecho depois de Villa O´Higgins para voltar a Argentina é difícil e não queríamos atravessar tão cedo outra trilha parecida com a “trilha do Telégrafo” (link para o POST) , que enfrentamos no Brasil. We traveled only 500 of the total of 1240 km of Carretera Austral, as we entered it by the “Paso Futaleufu” and left before its end (Villa O’Higgins). We chose to leave before the end of the Carretera because the stretch after Villa O’Higgins to return to Argentina is difficult and we did not want to cross so soon another track similar to the “telegraph trail” (link to POST), which we faced in Brazil .

Sem dúvidas a Carretera Austral é um paraíso do ciclo turismo mundial e quem tiver a oportunidade, deve colocar este roteiro nos planos. A experiência de quem cruza estes terrenos é multisensorial, sentindo aromas da natureza, ar fresco e puro, vendo belas paisagens e conhecendo pessoas fabulosas. Tudo muito enriquecedor. Without a doubt the Carretera Austral is a paradise of the cycle tourism world and who has the opportunity, must put this script in the plans. The experience of those who cross these lands is multisensorial, feeling the aromas of nature, fresh and pure air, seeing beautiful landscapes and meeting fabulous people. All very enriching.
