Aqui relatamos o nascimento da “Minhoca, nossa bicicleta. / Here we write about about our bicycle birth, “Minhoca”.

 Durante muito tempo viajamos em duas bicicletas separadas, a “Rufus” e “Penelope”, porém após alguns anos, uma coisa que fazia diferença em nossas viagens e as vezes causava um pequeno stress era a diferença de ritmo dos dois. Muitas vezes a Flávia tinha um ritmo mais lento e ficava para trás ou tínhamos que gritar um com o outro para nos ouvirmos. For a long time we traveled on two separate bikes, called “Rufus” and “Penelope”, but after a few years, the difference in our pace riding was stressful sometimes. Many times Flavia had a slower pace and stayed behind or we had to yell at each other to talk.

Foi então, pensando em resolver estes “problemas”, que após pesquisas chegamos na Tandem em websites como o thetandemmen.com, pardenomadas.com e cyclingabout.com por exemplo, com muita informação a respeito.  Then, thinking of solving these “problems” and after research we found some tandem websites like thetandemmen.com, pardenomadas.com and cyclingabout.com for example, with a lot of information about it.

Decidimos investir nesta ideia, visando principalmente acabar com os problemas de diferença de desempenho entre os dois, distanciamentos e dificuldade de comunicação. Até aí parecia tudo okay, porém começou a dificuldade em achar uma bicicleta tandem com uma geometria boa para nós dois (temos quase 20 cm de diferença na altura) e ao mesmo tempo com características mais favoráveis ao cicloturismo. No cenário nacional não encontramos nada que nos agradasse muito. We decided to invest in this idea, aiming mainly to end the problems of difference of performance between the twoand difficulty of communication. Until then everything seemed okay, but another problem appeared, finding a tandem bike with a good geometry for both of us (we have almost 20 cm difference in height) and at the same time with characteristics more favorable to cycle touring. In Brazil we did not find anything that pleased us very much.

Mas mesmo assim não desistimos da idéia, comecei a me comunicar com o pessoal das empresas Co-motion cycles e Santana, porém o preço do quadro e garfo após a taxas de importação, fretes e conversão tornaram estas opções inviáveis, infelizmente, uma vez que estas são empresas já consagradas entre os cicloturistas de longas distâncias em Tandems no exterior. But  we did not give up the idea. I started to communicate with the staff of Co-motion cycles and Santana, but the price of the frame and fork after import taxes, shipping and conversion made these options unfeasible, unfortunately, since these are companies already consecrated among the cycle tourists of long distances by tandems.

A última saída seria pesquisar mais, fazer o projeto de um quadro e garfo e encontrar um framebuilder talentoso para finalizá-lo. Gostamos da geometria das bicicletas da Co-Motion cycles, e baseados nas informações das fotos e referências pela internet chegamos nas medidas que caberiam melhor no nosso caso. Mas, agora havia surgido uma outra dificuldade no caso de uma tandem com seu tamanho longo: “Como transportá-la em aviões e outros meios sem tanto estresse a taxas extras a pagar?” The only way out would be to research more, do the design of a frame and fork and find a talented frame builder to do it. We like the geometry of Co-Motion cycles bikes, and based on the information of the photos and references on the internet we came up with the measures that would fit us best. But now another difficulty had arisen, in the case of a tandem with its long size: “How to transport it on planes and other means without so much stress at extra charges to pay?”

Pesquisando mais sobre o assunto, chegamos nos milagrosos acoplamentos S-S de quadro, que possibilitam dividi-lo em partes, mas aqui no Brasil não há nada parecido e a dificuldade para importar também tornava inviável. Mas não desistimos, já que havíamos feito o esboço da bike, por que não fazer o de uma peça para acoplamento também!? Looking further into the subject, we arrived at the miraculous S-S frame couplers, which make it possible to divide the frame into smaller pieces, but here in Brazil there is nothing like it and the difficulty to import also made it unfeasible. But we kept trying, since we had made the sketch of the bike frame, why not make one for the couplers too !?

 Bingo, fizemos o desenho e com a ajuda do amigo Emerson Massuia, ciclista que trabalha em uma empresa e maneja máquinas que produzem peças em aço, conseguímos. Ele pegou nosso projeto, deu uma melhorada, fez o modelo 3D e em cerca de 2 semanas, 2 pares de acoplamentos estavam prontos nas nossas mãos. Bingo, we made the design and with the help of our friend Emerson Massuia, a cyclist who works in a company and runs machines that produce steel parts, we did it. He took our design, make it better, also a 3D model and in about 2 weeks, 2 pairs of couplers were ready in our hands.

Com nossas pesquisas sobre frame builders encontramos um que topou fazer nossa tandem dentro do prazo necessário, com os acoplamentos e também deu um upgrade no nosso esboço de projeto da bicicleta. Conversamos várias vezes sobre detalhes do projeto e então, finalmente, após cerca de 2 meses e meio de espera e ansiedade recebemos a nossa bicicleta, exatamente como queríamos. With our research on frame builders we found one who accepted to make our tandem with the couplings and also upgraded our draft design. We talked several times about the details of the project and then finally after about two and a half months of waiting and anxiety we got our bike exactly as we wanted.

Depois de recebermos o quadro e garfo e já com as peças em mãos, algumas delas de nossas antigas bicicletas, começamos a etapa de montagem da tandem. Acabamos optando por usar movimentos centrais tradicionais, deixando a tensão da corrente as custas de um tensionador preso ao “boom tube”. Movimentos centrais excêntricos são difíceis de encontrar no Brasil e são caros. Acabamos usando pedivelas tradicionais também, com o cuidado de usar “cola trava rosca” de alto torque nos parafusos dos pedais, para que os mesmos não se soltassem, uma vez que optamos por deixar a corrente “timing” contra-lateral. After we received the frame and fork and already with the other bicycle parts in hand, some of them from our old bicycles, we began the stage of assembling the tandem. We ended up using traditional central motions with a central idler chain tensioner attached to the boom tube. Eccentric central movements are difficult to find in Brazil and are expensive. We used traditional cranks as well, with the care of using high-torque “thread glue” on the pedal screws so that they do not come loose, since we opted to leave the timing chain counter-side.
